For many parents, sending their child on their first school residential is a big step. It’s natural to feel a mix of pride, excitement – and a few nerves too.
At Manor Adventure, we’ve welcomed over 100,000 children every year for more than 30 years, and we understand exactly what matters most to families; safety, comfort and personal growth.
This guide answers the most common questions we hear from parents, and shows how we make sure every child enjoys a safe, happy and unforgettable experience.
Is my child safe?
Absolutely – your child’s safety is always our number one priority.
At Manor Adventure:
- All staff are DBS-checked, first-aid trained and safeguarding certified
- Instructors live on site, with a 24/7 duty manager always available
- Centres are gated, secure and closely supervised
- Every activity is risk-assessed and led by qualified instructors
We also provide schools and parents with all required risk assessments in advance of the trip, so everyone knows exactly how safety is managed.
What is the accommodation like?
We pride ourselves on high quality, clean, comfortable and safe facilities:
- The majority of rooms are en suite
- Accommodation is single-gender, with teachers in nearby rooms
- Teachers stay closeby and carry out regular check-ins
We keep our centres warm, welcoming and perfectly suited for a great night’s rest after a day of adventure.
What about food and allergies?
Children enjoy three nutritious, freshly prepared meals a day, cooked on site by our experienced catering teams.
We cater for all dietary requirements, including:
- Allergies and intolerances
- Religious or ethical diets (e.g. halal, vegetarian, vegan)
- Fussy eaters – we always offer simple alternatives
Schools share medical and dietary information before arrival, and our kitchen teams are fully briefed and trained to meet every child’s needs.
Will my child cope without me?
Almost every parent wonders this – and the reassuring truth is, most children thrive on their first residential.
That’s because:
- Activities start gently, building confidence step by step
- Instructors and teachers offer constant support and encouragement
- Team spirit helps children settle in quickly and grow friendships
Teamwork and fun quickly help any homesickness fade – and our staff are trained to help children manage it. By the end of the week, most pupils don’t want to leave!
What if my child has medical needs?
Every Manor Adventure centre is equipped to manage a wide range of medical requirements. We work closely with schools to ensure:
- Medication is stored and administered safely
- First-aid is available 24/7
- Any additional needs are carefully planned for in advance
With us handling over 100,000 clients a year, we have a huge amount of experience supporting all children.
What should we pack?
Your school will provide a full packing list, but key items include:
- Old, comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes
- A waterproof coat and warm layers
- Toiletries, a towel and nightwear
- A sleeping bag and pillow
- A small rucksack and labelled water bottle
We recommend leaving mobile phones and electronics at home – this helps children stay present, enjoy their surroundings and make lasting memories.
Our commitment to parents
As a family-run business, we fully understand the importance of family and we know trust is everything when it comes to your child. That’s why we:
- Work directly with schools to plan every detail in advance
- Keep teachers fully briefed on safety, meals and accommodation
- Offer clear communication and support materials for parents
You can find further reassurance and practical details in our online Parents’ Area, including our Parents’ Q&A where we cover everything from travel and supervision, to mealtime routines.
When parents feel confident, children feel confident too.
In summary
A school residential is a milestone moment – a chance for pupils to grow in independence, confidence and self-belief.
At Manor Adventure, we take that responsibility seriously. From safety and supervision, to comfort and care, every detail is designed to help your child feel secure and happy from start to finish.
Because when your child returns home, we want you to see what every parent tells us – a bigger smile, a braver spirit and a story they’ll never stop sharing.
